When a child shows delays in movement, balance, or self-care skills, parents often wonder which kind of therapy they need: occupational therapy (OT) or physical therapy (PT). At OrbRom Center in Phnom Penh, we offer both, and while these services may overlap, they serve different purposes in a child’s development.

Understanding the difference helps families make informed decisions and get the most effective support for their child’s growth.

What Is Occupational Therapy (OT)?

Occupational therapy focuses on helping children develop the skills needed for daily activities—or “occupations”—like dressing, feeding, writing, playing, or using school tools.

At OrbRom Center’s OT program, therapists support children with:

  • Fine motor skills (using fingers and hands)

  • Sensory processing and regulation

  • Attention and focus

  • Independence with self-care tasks

  • Coordination needed for classroom tasks

For example, in the image above, the child is working with a colorful ball in a play-based setting—an OT session might use this to develop visual tracking, reaching, sensory engagement, and motor planning.

What Is Physical Therapy (PT)?

Physical therapy, on the other hand, focuses on large muscle movements and improving strength, posture, and mobility. It’s often recommended for children with gross motor delays, orthopedic conditions, or neuromuscular challenges.

PT goals may include:

  • Learning to crawl, sit, stand, or walk

  • Building strength and endurance

  • Improving posture and balance

  • Enhancing body alignment and joint movement

While OT might work on holding a spoon, PT helps the child sit upright to eat independently.

How Do I Know Which My Child Needs?

In many cases, children benefit from both therapies. For instance:

  • A baby with delayed crawling may see a physical therapist to build core strength and coordination.

  • That same child may see an occupational therapist to work on grasping toys, calming routines, or sensory regulation.

At OrbRom Center, we start with a comprehensive developmental assessment to determine whether OT, PT, or a combination is the best fit. Our therapists collaborate to ensure therapy plans are holistic, practical, and enjoyable for the child.
